Basildon.
Basildon is a town in the east of England in the country of Essex with a population of 107,000 people. It covers postcodes SS13-SS16. Whilst Basildon is mentioned in the Domesday Book, the modern town was created after WWII and smaller rural hamlets and villages fall within its boundary. Basildon offers excellent shopping. The Eastgate Shopping Centre was the largest in the country when it opened in 1985 and in 2007 it underwent a £10 million refurbishment. There are also shops in Laindon and Pitsea, home of the famous market. East Walk and Town Square with their many coffee shops give visitors the chance to enjoy their refreshment alfresco. St Martin’s Church opened in 1962 and in 1999 a new, freestanding bell tower was added. There are older churches in the area including the parish churches of St Nicholas and St Peter; both dating back to the thirteenth century. Other historic buildings include the 15th century Cromwell Manor and 16th century Great Chalvedon Hall, which now houses a pub. Basildon has three railway stations with lines to Fenchurch Street in London.
